Samuel

Samuel was a leader of ancient Israel. He is also regarded as a prophet of Islam and is mentioned in Quran. Samuel is regarded as a prophet in Islamic faith. He is mentioned in Quran. Although his name is not mentioned, instead he is referred to as a “Prophet”. According to Islamic traditions, people of Israel wanted a leader to lead them and rule over their country after the time of Moses (Musa (AS)). So, Allah Almighty sent the prophet Samuel to anoint Saul (Talut) as the first king of Israel. As Allah Almighty says in Quran,

“Hast thou not Turned thy vision to the Chiefs of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Moses? they said to a prophet (That was) among them: “Appoint for us a king, that we May fight in the cause of God.” He said: “Is it not possible, if ye were commanded to fight, that that ye will not fight?” They said: “How could we refuse to fight in the cause of God, seeing that we were turned out of our homes and our families?” but when they were commanded to fight, they turned back, except a small band among them. But God Has full knowledge of those who do wrong.” (2:246)

Quran state that a king was appointed by the prophet, whose name was Talut. However, people of Israel rejected the king and said that he was not wealthy by birth but Quran praises Talut highly and regards him as gifted with spiritual and physical strength. After their rejection Samuel told them about the signs of kingship of Talut, as mentioned in Quran,

“Their Prophet said to them: ‘God hath appointed Talut as king over you.” They said: “How can he exercise authority over us when we are better fitted than he to exercise authority, and he is not even gifted, with wealth in abundance?’ He said: ‘God hath Chosen him above you, and hath gifted him abundantly with knowledge and bodily prowess: God Granteth His authority to whom He pleaseth. God careth for all, and He knoweth all things.’ And (further) their Prophet said to them: ‘A Sign of his authority is that there shall come to you the Ark of the covenant, with (an assurance) therein of security from your Lord, and the relics left by the family of Moses and the family of Aaron, carried by angels. In this is a symbol for you if ye indeed have faith.’” (2:247-248)

Yahya (AS)

Yahya (AS), also known as John, was a Prophet according to teachings of Quran and Islam. He is believed to be witnessed to word of Allah Almighty and a prophet who would herald the coming Isa (AS). He was son of Prophet Zakariya (AS).

Yahya (AS) was one of the prophets Muhammad (SAW) met on the night of Miraj, journey to heavens, according to Islamic traditions. Muhammad (SAW) met and greeted Yahya (AS) and Isa (AS) on the second heaven before ascending to third heaven with Gabriel, where he met Joseph (Yusuf (AS)). The story of Yahya (AS) aws also told to Habeshan king during Muslims’ migration to Habesha.

The name yahya (AS) given in Quran, in Arabic means “he shall live”, spiritually meaning that Yahya (AS) will be remembered forever as a great prophet by Muslims. It is mentioned in Quran, several times by Allah Almighty, the prayers of Zakariya (AS). Birth of Yahya (AS) was a gift of Allah Almighty to Zakariya (AS). The name was specially chosen for this child. According to the prayers of Zakariya (AS) was made messenger of Allah and renewed message of Allah. The news of birth of yahya (AS) are mentioned in the following words in Quran,

“(His prayer was answered): ‘O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: His name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before.’ He said: ‘O my Lord! How shall I have a son, when my wife is barren and I have grown quite decrepit from old age?’ He said: ‘So (it will be) thy Lord saith, that is easy for Me: I did indeed create thee before, when thou hadst been nothing!’(Zakariya) said: ‘O my Lord! give me a Sign.’ ‘Thy Sign,’ was the answer, ‘Shall be that thou shalt speak to no man for three nights, although thou art not dumb.’” (19:7-10)

Yahya (AS) was given wisdom by Allah Almighty when he was still a child. He was pure and devout and walked well in presence of Allah Almighty. He was obedient to his parents and respectful as well. As Allah says in Quran,

“And piety (for all creatures) as from Us, and purity: He was devout,” (19:13

Gabriel

Gabriel is an archangel who serves as a messenger fro Allah Almighty to Humans. According to teachings of Quran and Sunnah, Gabriel is the angel who revealed Quran to Prophet Muhammad (SAW). He also revealed messages most of other prophets mentioned by Islam. He is called the leader of the four superior angels and the spirit of truth.

It is also mentioned in Quran that Gabriel was the angel who informed Mary (Maryam (AS)) of how she would conceive Jesus (Isa (AS)). According to the teachings of Islam, Gabriel was the angel who accompanied Muhammad (SAW) during the night of Miraj, when Muhammad (SAW) travelled to heavens. Gabriel descends to earth on the night of “Laylat al-Qadr”.

Quran is very clear denouncing the concept of trinity and affirming the oneness of Allah Almighty.  The Holy Spirit is described as Angel Gabriel who has been the messenger between Allah Almighty and Humans such as Muhammad (SAW), Isa (AS). As it is said in Quran,

“We took the covenant of the Children of Israel and sent them apostles, every time, there came to them an apostle with what they themselves desired not – some (of these) they called impostors, and some they (go so far as to) slay.” (5:73)

And,

“Say: He is God, the One and Only; God, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is He begotten; And there is none like unto Him.”(112:1-4)

Barzakh

Barzakh is an Arabic word with meaning of ‘a limit or boundary separating two things’. According to Quran and Hadith it is the time through which every dead person, Muslim or non-Muslim, believer or disbeliever, will pass. The trial of grave will take place during this time along with the questioning of two angels, Munkar and Nakeer followed by reward of paradise or punishment of hell. According to teachings of Islam and Quran, there are three stages of soul,

  • This world
  • Barzakh
  • Hereafter

Barzakh is meant to be a place, where souls are kept in between the period after their death until the Day of Judgment. Whoever dies in the state of emaan is kept in the state blessings according to their good deeds and mercy of Allah. Who die in the state of disbelief or committed major sins and do not take repentance of Allah Almighty, are kept in state of continues punishment according to level of their sins.

Barzakh is also defined as the sequence that happens after death, in which angel of death separate soul from body, harsh fully or painlessly, according to the righteousness of the person. Allah Almighty says about Barzakh in Quran,

“It is He Who has let free the two bodies of flowing water: One palatable and sweet, and the other salt and bitter; yet has He made a barrier between them, a partition that is forbidden to be passed.’’(25:53)

“He has let free the two bodies of flowing water, meeting together. Between them is a Barrier (Barzakh) which they do not transgress.”(55:19-20)

Beliefs of Islam

Belief in Allah

Islam’s fundamental faith is ‘Tauhid’ or oneness of Allah. It is that believe that there is only one God, He created the whole universe and everything works on His command. As it is told in Quran,

Say: He is God, the One and Only; God, the Eternal, Absolute; He begetteth not, nor is He begotten; And there is none like unto Him” (112:1-4)

Muslims accept Jesus as a Prophet but refuse the “christian doctrine of trinity”. Allah is beyond all comprehension and He is referred to by many names and attributes e.g. Al-Rahman, Al-Rahim etc. Muslims believe that the purpose of existence of everything is to worship Allah Almighty. Allah is nearer to us than anything and He responds to our needs.

Belief in Angels

Belief in Angels is essential to the faith of Islam. The Arabic word for angel is ‘Malak’ meaning messenger. Angels do not have any free will and they worship Allah in obedience all the time. There are different kinds of angels for different duties such as communicating revelations from Allah, changing of weathers, rains etc, recording deeds of every person and taking a person’s soul on death. Allah describes Angels in Quran as,

“messengers with wings,- two, or three, or four (pairs): He adds to Creation as He pleases:” (35:1)

Belief in Divine Books

The holy books are the records which were dictated by Allah to his prophets. Parts of revealed books prior to Quran were corrupted and are not in their original form. Quran is the final revelation of Allah Almighty, revealed to last Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Muslims are required to believe that Allah Almighty sent his revelations to His prophets for guidance of human beings and they were recorded in shape of books.

Belief in Prophets

An integral part of Muslim faith is the belief in all prophets and messengers of Allah Almighty without any exception. Prophet is a person who is given revelations by Allah Almighty in different forms, which are Inspiration, direct speech (in case of Moosa (AS)) and revelation brought by angel Jibreel (AS). About belief in prophets, Allah says in Quran,

“Say, We believe in God, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Isma’il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them: And we bow to God (in Islam).”(2:136)

Belief in Day of Judgment

Belief in Day of Judgment is also critical for Muslim’s faith. The time of day of Judgment is fixed but not known to anyone except Allah Almighty. All the events regarding this day are described in Quran and hadith.

Belief in Predestination

Belief in Predestination means that Allah has full control and knowledge about everything that occurs. As said in Quran,

“Say: “Nothing will happen to us except what God has decreed for us: He is our protector”: and on God let the Believers put their trust.”(9:51)

Everything that happens in the world, good or bad, is preordained and nothing can happen without the will of Allah.
